How access control helps locksmiths win more work
Access control for locksmiths:
more work from the customers you already have
If you're a locksmith wondering whether access control means walking away from the trade you know, it doesn't. It helps you win more jobs, earn more from each customer, and give people a reason to call you back. You already understand doors, locks, security, and what your customers need. Access control simply gives you another answer when a traditional lock isn't the best fit for the door in front of you.
We've recently joined the Master Locksmiths Association (MLA), and this is the conversation we're most looking forward to having with members.
What it adds to your locksmith business
When a customer asks about access control and the answer is "that's not really my area", the job goes to someone else. Being able to say yes turns more of those enquiries into work, and you keep a customer who might otherwise have drifted.
It also lifts what each customer is worth to you. You're already on site fitting or repairing locks, so adding access control to that same visit means a bigger job without having to go and find a new customer to get it.
Then there's the work that comes after. Because you're the one who does the install, you're the natural person they ring when something needs changing, which gives you a reason to keep coming back.
Upselling stops feeling like selling, too. It grows out of conversations you're already having, so when a mechanical lock isn't the most suitable option, you can recommend something that is rather than making do.
And you're building on what you know. The things that make you good at your job, understanding how doors work, how locks secure them, and what a customer actually needs, are the same things access control relies on.
Getting started without changing what you do
Start small. Keep doing the locksmith work you're known for and add access control as an option for the customers it suits. The next time a lock isn't quite right for a door, you'll have something better to offer.
Leaving it off the menu doesn't stop customers wanting it, so they simply look elsewhere. Once someone else is fitting their access control, it's only natural they start asking that same person to look after their locks too. Offer it yourself, and you become the locksmith they call for every door, whatever it needs.
