Electric locks like this one made by Abloy use a locking prism, the prism is held in the locking position by spring force. When the door is closed the prism engages with the striking plate.

When the electric strike is energised the prism is then fixed into position and the door is now safely locked.

A Fail Unlocked lock can be safely used in public buildings as if there were to be a power supply failure the door will safely open. So in the event of an emergency people will not be trapped and they can leave a building safely.

In models with integrated door contact, locking actuation to door closed status, operated by the door contact, can be restricted The integrated armature contact (25 V/1 A) can be used to electronically monitor locking status.

Please note: This product requires a swing door closer with adjustable closing pressure and closing speed which securely positions the door leaf ready for locking.
