Here are some great questions that you should be asking before choosing a system...

>  what's the intuitive user experience like?

Do you want the ability to access unlock and manage systems remotely through web based or mobile access?

>  What support do I need to run a great door entry system?

>  Do I need a unified system that will work across different sites?

>  Do I need a system that will work with other systems such as CCTV?

>  Do I want a system that is locally hosted or an onsite server?

>  Do I need a system that is 'cloud based'?

>  Is a 'hybrid' system the best option for me?

>  Can access cards be used at more than one location?

>  Can you create temporary and guest passes?

>  Can fobs and keys be personalised?

>  Can I create regular usage reports?

>  Can I manage and edit card privileges remotely?

>  Can my existing cards and fobs be used on a new system?

>  Do access control systems work when the power is off?

>  Can access control systems be integrated with other security systems?

>  Does everything already in place in changing?

>  How many doors / buildings do you need to make secure? You may not need to secure every door, but you may need to set up a system with 'secure zones'.

>  Do you need different levels of access such as the Server room, Accounts and HR office?

>  Do you need to control who goes out as well as in? For example, schools need to protect pupils by ensuring that they can't leave the premises unattended, as well as preventing unauthorised visitors from entering.

>  How many people exit in an emergency or power cut?

>  How will you allow visitors access, will you speak to them via intercom?

>  Is time, attendance and the whereabouts of staff important to your business? If staff are paid on an hourly rate you can use access control systems to 'clock in and out'.

>  What do I need to be aware of if I'm planning to use CCTV in conjunction with an access control system?

>  Are access control systems just limited to doors?

Access control systems can be used on turnstiles, barriers and even traffic lights. In fact, anywhere access can be electronically controlled can benefit from being included in an access control solution. Door Entry Direct supply a range of turnstiles, gates and barriers, all available in different sizes and security levels.

>  What's biometric access control?

Biometric access control is a relatively new technology that relies on unique human features such as fingerprint scanning and even facial recognition. The advantage of biometrics over more traditional cards, fobs, codes or PINs is you can be completely certain of who has access and who can gain entry. It's a far more secure form of access control.

>  Fail safe and fail secure door...what's the difference?

There are two main types of electrified door states. 'Fail safe' and 'fail secure'. The simple difference is what happens when power is lost. The loss of power resulting in the door becoming and staying unlocked is 'fail safe'.

The loss of power leaving a door locked is 'fail secure'.

>  What happens if a card or fob is lost or stolen?

The most important thing is that if this happens it needs to be reported as lost or stolen. It's then simply a case that the card can be rendered useless by having access denied on the system. The access control system should also be able to tell where and when the lost or stolen card has been used.
